Description

1855-S Ten Dollar, Great-Looking AU58
Second-Year S-Mint Issue

1855-S $10 AU58 NGC. The second-year eagle issue from the newly opened San Francisco Mint was a meager 9,000 pieces, a tiny fraction of the debut tens' production, nearly 124,000 coins. As expected, most of these early S-mint gold pieces are found in well-circulated grades, usually VF to low XF. This near-Mint State example is a great-looking exception, clearly a coin that was snatched from circulation before it could acquire more than light field chatter on the well-struck yellow-gold surfaces. A small tick appearing at the corner of Liberty's mouth is the only singular mark. Census: 3 in 58, 0 finer (1/14).
