Description

1855-S Ten Dollar, AU58
Slanted 5s Style, Unknown in Mint State

1855-S $10 AU58 NGC. The mintages of some of the S-mint eagle issues from the first decade of production at the San Francisco Mint are remarkably low; the emphasis was on double eagles rather than the smaller denomination. The 1855-S eagle was struck to the extent of 9,000 pieces, compared to 879,675 examples of the 1855-S twenty. This near-Mint State 1855-S ten shows deep reddish-orange color with a bold strike and light field chatter on each side. The Slanted 5s style makes this a favorite issue for some numismatists. Neither NGC nor PCGS shows any certifications in Mint State. Census: 3 in 58, 0 finer (2/14).
