    1856-O Ten Dollar, AU50
    Underrated New Orleans Issue

1856-O $10 AU50 NGC. Variety 1. The obverse shows die rust around LIBE, and the O mintmark is low relative to the fletching. Far less well-known than its double eagle counterpart, the 1856-O ten dollar gold piece has a survivorship of only 100 to 125 coins from a mintage of 14,500 pieces. A few star radials are visible on this AU50 example, and Liberty's curls are well-defined for a lightly circulated New Orleans product. The eagle's wing tips, left leg, and olive leaves are incomplete. Hints of luster remain, issuing from deep yellow-gold surfaces.(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 263R, PCGS# 8620)
