    Description

    Appealing 1856-O Eagle, AU50

1856-O $10 AU50 PCGS. The coinage of 1856, including the 1856-O eagle, comprises the first antebellum issues in which the Mint reverted to its former style of using Upright 5s in place of the Slanted 5s, which are thought to have been a signature or preference of Mint Engraver James B. Longacre. Light wear appears as expected on the antique-gold surfaces, but plenty of appeal remains, and there are no singular abrasions. This is an issue that is all but unknown in Mint State, where only PCGS has certified a single MS60 example--despite the presence of several pieces, all AU, aboard the S.S. Republic. Population: 11 in 50, 21 finer (9/09).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 263R, PCGS# 8620)
