    Description

    1856-O Ten Dollar, Near-Mint
    Underappreciated New Orleans Issue
    Only Three Coins Finer

1856-O $10 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. The New Orleans Mint struck 14,500 eagles in 1856. Three die pairs are known, all with the same obverse die. The three reverses are distinguished by the mintmark placement -- high, medium, and low relative to the fletching. The mintmark is low on Variety 1. Though not as nearly rare as its famous double eagle counterpart, the 1856-O ten dollar gold piece is an elusive issue in its own right. Doug Winter calls it "unheralded" and "an issue which is not often seen in grades above the VF-XF range." Examples this fine are scarce, and Winter knows of only three Uncirculated pieces among the 100 to 125 coins that survive despite the likely inflated population totals.

The reverse on this near-Mint representative is better-struck than the obverse, as always, with good detail on the eagle's feathers. Most star radials are apparent, and softness is only moderate over the curls and hair strands. Yellow-gold surfaces retain an impressive degree of luster within the protected regions. Marks are trivial, though scattered hairlines appear on each side. Census: 20 in 58 (1 in 58+), 4 finer (5/19).(Registry values: N2998)
