Description
Tough Near-Mint 1856-S Eagle
1856-S $10 AU58 NGC. Medium S. An intricately struck and flashy piece with extensive semi-prooflike peripheral luster. Light peach toning enriches the moderately abraded surfaces. Other than the introductory 1854-S, the 1856-S is the most available San Francisco eagle prior to 1879. However, it is rare by the general standards of U.S. gold coins. Just 68,000 pieces were struck, and perhaps 300 pieces have survived the passage of time, mostly in XF to AU grades. NGC has certified just one piece as Mint State. Census: 33 in 58, 1 finer (2/06).(Registry values: N1793)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 263S, PCGS# 8621, Greysheet# 9451)
