Far Finer Than Usually Seen
1856-S $10 AU58 NGC. Medium S. The plentiful supplies of
California gold ensured a high mintage for the 1856-S eagle, at
68,000 coins, but most went directly into the hard-money-oriented
commercial channels of the Old West. This near-Mint State example
is far finer than usually seen, with generous luster clinging to
well-struck orange-gold surfaces. Census: 46 in 58, 2 finer
