    Description

The Second Finest 1857 Eagle Known to PCGS

1857 $10 AU58 PCGS. The Philadelphia Mint produced just 16,606 Eagles in 1857, and the certified population of this issue falls off rapidly as one approaches the Mint State threshold. This is a Condition Census example whose bright, satiny surfaces exhibit no more than the expected number of abrasions for a circulated gold coin of this size. A trio of pinscratches in the right revere field are, however, worthy of individual mention. Sharply struck in the centers. From the standpoint of total number of coins known, the 1857 is equally as rare as the 1851 and 1854. Population: 1 in 58, only one (an MS62 representative) finer (7/01). (NGC ID# 263T, PCGS# 8622)
