Rare Date, From the S.S. Republic
1857-S $10 AU55 NGC. Ex: S.S. Republic. The recent
discovery of treasure left behind when the S.S. Republic
sank has rewritten the rarity ratings for many issues. Among those
are a few near-Mint and Mint State 1857-S eagles that were
recovered from the treasure, among the first of their kind. This
Choice AU piece is fully lustrous with bright green-gold surfaces.
Just 26,000 pieces were originally struck -- one doubts if any
significant quantities remain to be found. Census: 4 in 55, 6 finer
(7/19).Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2009), lot 5539.(Registry values: N2998)
