Description

1857-S Ten Dollar, AU58
Low Mintage, Conditionally Rare

1857-S $10 AU58 NGC. Although the First San Francisco Mint struck double eagles in considerable quantity, the facility struck relatively few eagles, though the denomination was coined every year. The 1857-S ten dollar production was only 26,000 pieces, a reduction from the prior year's mintage of 68,000 pieces. Given the lack of contemporary collector interest in the high denomination, or mintmarked coins in general, it is unsurprising that the 1857-S is very rare today in near-Mint condition. This partly lustrous wheat-gold example is surprisingly unblemished and has an above-average strike. Census: 5 in 58, 1 finer (6/20).(Registry values: N2998)
