Description

1857-S Ten Dollar, MS61
Bright Surfaces, Semiprooflike Fields

1857-S $10 MS61 NGC. Only 26,000 pieces were struck of the 1857-S ten, and before the recovery of the S.S. Central America this date/mintmark combination was virtually unknown in high grades. It is still scarce, but occasionally offered. NGC has only certified one piece finer (an MS63), and PCGS has graded eight coins in mint condition (11/18). This is a bright yellow-gold example that displays semiprooflike fields, and there are no obvious or detracting abrasions on either side. The strike is pinpoint-sharp on all the devices. Census: 1 in 61, 1 finer (11/18).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 263V, PCGS# 8624, Greysheet# 9453)
