    1858 Eagle, Eye-Appealing AU53
Low Mintage of 2,521 Circulation Strikes

1858 $10 AU53 NGC. CAC. The 1858 eagle had a remarkably low production of only 2,521 circulation strikes. Garrett and Guth state that business strikes in AU are rare. The present AU53 example is one of four such at NGC, and 10 are finer. The typical circulated 1858 is heavily worn and/or abraded, usually no better than Choice XF. This piece is far nicer, with a bold strike and excellent eye appeal over the mostly yellow-gold surfaces that take on reddish-orange patina around the margins. Each side is peppered with numerous small marks, but the only abrasions worthy of individual note cross the end of the coronet and another above the eagle's head. Collectors seeking a new numismatic challenge might do well to consider the Type One (No Motto) eagle series.

Another major house refused the work stating it was too unique for the artist. Heritage saw that as an advantage!
