Rare 1858 Eagle
1858 XF 40 PCGS. The 1858 ten is one of the legendary rarities of the series. Its fame has been known for many decades. Akers estimates that only 25-30 pieces exist in all grades while Breen halves that estimate and reckons that perhaps only 12-15 pieces survive. The 1858 is also an important condition rarity, being seldom located above the VF-XF level. This piece shows even wear on the highpoints of the devices with some subtle reddish color throughout. The two most noticeable marks (mentioned for pedigree purposes) are a milling mark in the left obverse field below the chin of Liberty, and a thin scratch on the reverse extending above the first A in AMERICA. Of the greatest importance to the specialist in this popular series.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 263W, PCGS# 8625, GSID# 9379)
