    Description

1858 Eagle, A Highly Publicized Rarity

1858 $10 XF 40 NGC. For some unknown reason, the floor fell out from under the Philadelphia Mint's production of eagles in 1858 and the denomination registered a paltry mintage of 2,521 pieces. The number of extant survivors ranges from Breen's estimate of 12-15 coins to Akers' "guesstimate" of 25-30 examples. Both authors agree that heavily abraded Fine, VF, and XF specimens account for the lion's share of 1858 eagles known to today's collecting community. Comfortably graded at the XF level, the present example displays honey-tan coloration that deepens to rich copper shades in the protected areas around the devices. Both sides are typically abraded, but there are relatively few sizeable distractions and the devices retain ample striking definition. A definite find for the gold date collector. (NGC ID# 263W, PCGS# 8625)
