Description
PCGS 1859 AU 53. The 1859 is a rare date in all grades and is considered by Breen to be "prohibitively rare (in) AU." Only 16,093 pieces were struck and Akers only recorded the appearance in auction of 2 coins in AU over the 57 year period he surveyed for his work on this series. The centers are surprisingly well defined on this coin with slight softness noted on the peripheral stars. The fields still retain some of the original prooflike surface in the more protected areas, and there are a number of small to medium sized abrasions scattered across both sides. Trends $3,100 in AU 50.
