    About Uncirculated 1859-S Eagle
Seldom Offered at This Grade Level

1859-S $10 AU50 PCGS. Many of the early gold coin emissions from the San Francisco Mint, which opened for production in 1854, are either unknown -- or virtually so -- in Mint State. It took years for San Francisco to produce a sufficient quantity of gold coins to sate the demand created by a booming California economy, a region of America accustomed to "hard money" and leery of any substitutes. Most gold coins struck in the region, whether privately or federally issued, saw extensive circulation. The 1859-S eagle, struck in the amount of 7,000 pieces, is unknown in Mint State save for a single MS60 coin at NGC; most certified survivors average no more than XF40 to XF45. This AU50 PCGS example shows antique-gold surfaces with a scattering of small- to medium-sized marks, none particularly overt and fewer than expected. The large S mintmark is startling but typical for the issue. Population: 5 in 50, 3 finer (1/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2643, PCGS# 8630)

    Weight: 16.72 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
