Description

1859-S Liberty Eagle, AU53
Major Condition Rarity

1859-S $10 AU53 NGC. A major condition rarity in the series, surviving from a mintage of only 7,000 coins. Other gold coins struck in San Francisco that year include 15,000 gold dollars, 15,200 quarter eagles, 13,220 half eagles, and 636,445 double eagles. Clearly the large double eagles were the chosen denomination among gold depositors at the San Francisco Mint.
The average grade of all certified 1859-S eagles is below 40, clearly indicating an issue that was intended for circulation. Among finer coins, NGC has certified one Mint State piece with none at PCGS. This piece, a lovely AU specimen, has light yellow surfaces with a trace of green, minor surface marks as expected, and traces of wear on each side. However, it retains considerable mint luster that heightens its eye appeal. Here is an important opportunity for the specialist. Census: 4 in 53, 5 finer (2/11).(Registry values: N4719)
