1859-S Ten Dollar, AU53
Underrated San Francisco Rarity

1859-S $10 AU53 NGC. "The 1859-S eagle, like most of the S-Mint dates from the 1850s and 1860s, is an underappreciated rarity that would be worth many times its current value if date collectors focused their attention on No Motto eagles.": Thus Garrett and Guth begin their narrative on this issue in their gold coin Encyclopedia. The 1859-S comes from a small mintage of 7,000 coins, and PCGS estimates that only 40 to 60 pieces survive overall. The combined NGC and PCGS certified population of 75 coins likely includes resubmissions. Only a single example is designated as Mint State, grading merely MS60. The 1859-S is every bit as rare as its New Orleans counterpart, even though the O-mint issue has an even smaller mintage of 2,300 coins.

This AU '59-S is boldly detailed with much luster remaining in the fields. Each side shows scattered abrasions and bright straw-gold patina. Stars 1 and 2 show trivial weakness, being the only ill-defined portion of the design. Census: 5 in 53, 6 finer (7/16).
