Description

Rare 1859-S Ten Dollar, AU53

1859-S $10 AU53 NGC. The 1859-S ten dollar, with a mintage of 7,000 pieces, is difficult to locate in any grade. While estimates of surviving specimens are sketchy, NGC and PCGS combined have seen 74 coins, pretty much evenly distributed throughout the Very Good to high-end About Uncirculated continuum.
This yellow-gold AU53 example displays luster in the recessed areas. The design elements are sharply defined, save for minor softness in portions of Liberty's hair. The few minute contact marks that we see scattered about are not out of context with what would be expected for the grade designation. Census: 4 in 53, 5 finer (7/07).(Registry values: N4719)
