    1859-S Eagle, High-Grade AU53
Low Mintage of Only 7,000 Pieces

1859-S $10 AU53 NGC. In the space between the sinking of the S.S. Central America and the onset of the Civil War, strikings of non-double-eagle gold coins at San Francisco were small in absolute terms: Just 7,000 1859-S eagles were struck, for example. That mintage of a few thousand coins saw considerable circulation, and even Choice XF examples rate as condition rarities. This AU53 representative retains ample peach-laced yellow luster and a hint of a swirl on the reverse. Better-defined on central devices than the peripheries with scattered light abrasions through the fields and a shallow pinscratch to the left of Liberty's earlobe. Census: 5 in 53, 5 finer (8/12).(Registry values: N4719)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2643, PCGS# 8630)

    Weight: 16.72 grams
