Description
1859-S Ten Dollar Gold, AU55
Overall About 50 to 75 Examples Survive
1859-S $10 AU55 NGC. The early San Francisco Mint ten dollar
gold issues struck from 1854 through 1866 are all characterized by
low mintages and low survival rates. During this 13-year period the
entire output of San Francisco Mint eagles amounted to just 316,000
coins, an average of only 24,000 pieces per year. More than
one-third of this total production occurred in 1854, so the revised
average for 1855 to 1866 was a mere 16,000 coins per year. Of
course, in 1859 the S-mint eagle production was limited to just
7,000 coins. This piece is a Choice About Uncirculated example from
that small mintage, with partially reflective fields and rich,
green-gold surfaces that display nearly full satin luster. Splashes
of pale orange color are evident on each side, adding extra eye
appeal. NGC Census: 3 in 55, 4 finer (3/25).Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2007), lot 4740; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2008), lot 3263. (Registry values: N4719)
