    Description

    1859-S Liberty Eagle, XF45
    San Francisco Rarity

1859-S $10 XF45 NGC. This rare San Francisco issue had a scant mintage of only 7,000 coins. The combined NGC and PCGS populations count 72 survivors in all grades, but this number is inflated by resubmissions; more likely, fewer than 60 pieces are extant, and only one those (an MS60 NGC coin) is in Mint State. This Choice XF example is comparable to the Smithsonian coin, also an XF45 example, per Garrett and Guth. Slight wear determines the grade, but leaves tinges of luster in the protected regions of the fields. Wheat-gold surfaces are fairly smooth. Census: 9 in 45, 16 finer (8/15).(Registry values: N2998)

    Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2643, PCGS# 8630)

    Weight: 16.72 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
