Description

1862-S Liberty Eagle, AU50
Elusive, Low-Mintage Issue

1862-S $10 AU50 NGC. A modest mintage of 12,500 Liberty eagles was accomplished at the San Francisco Mint in 1862. The coins were released into circulation and few high quality examples were saved by contemporary collectors. Accordingly, this low mintage issue is rarely encountered in better AU grades, and Mint State specimens are virtually unobtainable. This impressive AU specimen shows only light wear on the high points of the devices and the orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded for the grade. Pockets of original mint luster remain intact in sheltered areas. Census: 7 in 50, 21 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N4719)
