Description

1862-S Ten Dollar, AU53
Much Better No Motto Issue

1862-S $10 AU53 NGC. All San Francisco ten dollar issues struck between 1857 and 1877 are rare. The 1862-S is no exception. PCGS states only "60 to 80 known," with just a single Mint State piece certified by NGC. The mintage was a scant 12,500 pieces, and none were saved for numismatic purposes until decades after production. This straw-gold example has many areas of luster, prevalent within the wings and about the letters and stars. The reverse rim has a bright area at 9:30, but the sole abrasion worthy of mention is a horizontal mark east of star 3. Census: 8 in 53, 13 finer (6/22).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 264A, PCGS# 8636, Greysheet# 9461)
