Description
1862-S Liberty Eagle, AU53
Elusive, Low-Mintage San Francisco Issue
1862-S $10 AU53 NGC. Mostly brilliant surfaces display much
original mint luster visible around the stars, letters, and
numerals. Wisps of pale amber and olive iridescence complement the
rims. The 1862-S eagle is a scarce and desirable issue in all
grades and an important condition rarity at the AU53 level. David
Akers wrote about this issue back in 1980 as follows: "To the best
of my knowledge, the 1862-S is unknown in AU or Uncirculated
condition; at least I have not seen or heard of one." Today, two
Mint State examples are certified -- an MS60 at NGC, and and an
MS61 at PCGS, plus a small number of About Uncirculated coins are
listed at both services. PCGS suggests 60 to 80 examples are known,
while the latest Bowers' reference estimates 80 to 110 pieces
survive in all grades combined. Only 12,500 pieces were struck. NGC
Census: 8 in 53, 13 finer (5/22).Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2005), lot 4782.
