Description

1862-S Ten Dollar, AU55
Just Two Coins Finer at NGC

1862-S $10 AU55 NGC. The 1862-S is scarce by mintage (12,500 pieces made) and by its San Francisco Mint origin, where fresh coinage was always pressed into immediate service in commerce, the 1862-S is conditionally rare in any grade approaching Mint State. One can hardly miss the mintmark on the coin (it is a Large S), although collectors of the era had no interest in such things. This surviving example is still-lustrous with tempting orange-gold surfaces and only minor abrasions. A sharp strike adds to the considerable eye appeal. The S.S. Republic yielded only a single example. Census: 8 in 55, 2 finer (7/16).
