1862-S Eagle, Still-Lustrous AU58
Exceptional Condition Rarity
Just One Example Finer

1862-S $10 AU58 NGC. The San Francisco Mint, which opened just eight years before this coin was struck, was established to provide the Western regions of this country with gold and silver coinage for circulation. Deposits from local mines were converted into coins, which were in turn used extensively in commerce. Few, if any, collectors concerned themselves with collecting by mintmark at that time, and so high-grade S-mint coins from this period seldom survived.

The 1862-S eagle claims a mintage of only 12,500 pieces. About 80 examples are believed extant. This is one of the finest examples known, surpassed by a single MS61 coin that had not been seen by or known to the numismatic community prior to 2011. Indeed, this coin is finer than those in the Eliasberg, Norweb, and Bass holdings. Even the Smithsonian's coin only grades XF45. This is truly a coin of exceptional condition rarity.

Bright, frosty mint luster shines from this near-Mint peach-gold ten dollar. A trace of friction and a slightly incomplete impression result in softness on the stars and the highest points of the portrait and eagle. Marks are more prevalent on the obverse than the reverse, but they are still relatively minor. Census: 2 in 58, 0 finer (1/18).
