Description

Rare Extremely Fine 1862-S Liberty Eagle

1862-S $10 XF40 PCGS. This Civil War era issue is seldom offered in grades above the VF level. This makes sense because the suspension of specie payments early in the war did not drive coins out of circulation in California. Most likely, the vast majority of the 12,500-piece 1862-S Eagle delivery entered circulation and remained there until extensively worn or lost. This coin exhibits rich olive-gold color with the occasional whisper of copper-orange shading. The central devices are suitably detailed for both the issue and the grade, and the number of light and moderate abrasions is consistent with a frontier era Eagle that saw 20 points of circulation. (NGC ID# 55H4, PCGS# 8636)

    Weight: 16.72 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
