Description

1863 Ten Dollar, Seldom-Seen AU50
Low-Mintage Civil War Issue

1863 $10 AU50 PCGS. The mintage of this mid-Civil War eagle issue was a meager 1,218 pieces for circulation (plus 30 proofs) at a time when coinage of all gold denominations, with the broad exception of S-mint double eagles (the ravages of the Civil War were distant in geography and economy from the Old West of that era), had dried up to a trickle. For 1863, the quarter eagles were a proof-only issue, and between Philadelphia and San Francisco, fewer than 20,000 half eagles were struck.

The 1863 eagle, besides its low production figure, is additionally rare because the few collectors of the day preferred proof coins to circulation strikes for their collections. This honey-gold AU50 PCGS example boasts well-struck surfaces overall (save for a couple of the right-side obverse stars) that show a few scattered ticks and light circulation wear. There is little distraction on surfaces that are, rather, extremely appealing. A touch of prooflike reflectivity remains in the protected area around the date. A very rare coin, seldom seen in any grade. Population: 5 in 50, 6 finer (2/16).(Registry values: N7079)
