    1863 Ten, Well-Defined AU53
    A Celebrated Rarity

1863 $10 AU53 PCGS. The paltry 1,248-piece mintage of the 1863 eagle reflects the precipitous drop in the output of gold coins from the Philadelphia Mint. The PCGS website indicates that only 30 to 45 specimens are known. PCGS and NGC combined have seen fewer than 40 coins, some of which are likely resubmissions. Only four of these are Mint State.

The yellow-gold surfaces of this AU53 example display luster in the recessed areas. The design elements are well-defined despite high-point wear, and the scattered light marks are in concert with a coin having seen brief circulation. A light copper spot beneath the D in UNITED will help to identify the coin. This may be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire this celebrated rarity. Housed in a prior generation holder. Population: 1 in 53, 4 finer (11/13).
