Description

1863 Eagle, Sharply Struck XF45
Tiny Mintage of 1,218 Business Strikes

1863 $10 XF45 NGC. Ex: Richmond Collection. The 1863 is another low-mintage issue from the darkest days of the Civil War; in fact, we would call it extremely low-mintage, given the production of 1,218 circulation strikes plus 30 proofs. The companion quarter eagle of this year was struck only in proof format, but the 1863 eagles were particularly hard-hit. This Choice XF example displays luster that is somewhat thinned in the fields consistent with the grade, but the devices are uniformly sharp throughout both sides. This piece is in about the average grade of certified survivors of this tiny production. Census: 8 in 45, 7 finer (1/14).
Ex: Richmond Collection (David Lawrence, 7/2004), lot 2071, which brought $9,775.
