Description

1863 Liberty Eagle, XF45
Rare, Low-Mintage Wartime Issue

1863 $10 XF45 PCGS. The financial stresses and uncertainties of the Civil War caused widespread hoarding of precious-metal coinage after 1861. The government reacted by suspending specie payments and drastically reducing gold and silver coinage at the Philadelphia Mint throughout the war era. As a result, only 1,248 Liberty eagles were struck in 1863, making the issue extremely elusive in all grades today. PCGS CoinFacts estimates the surviving population at 30-45 specimens in all grades. On the average, public offerings occur about once per year.

The present coin is an attractive Choice XF example that shows some light wear on the well-detailed design elements. The vivid orange-gold surfaces show the expected number of minor abrasions for the grade, with traces of prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas around the devices. Altogether, a pleasing representative of this celebrated 19th century rarity. Population: 3 in 45, 11 finer (7/16).
