Description

1864 Liberty Head Eagle, AU55
Bass Provenance, Very Rare Issue

1864 $10 AU55 PCGS. Ex: Harry W. Bass, Jr. The 1864 Liberty Head ten dollar gold was a Civil War issue with a very low mintage of only 3,530 coins. Most coins of the issue are well-circulated. Even considering all survivors of the date, only an estimated 42 eagles of the 1864 Philadelphia Mint exist, according to the current PCGS estimate. At the Choice About Uncirculated grade, PCGS has graded 7 coins, with only 3 finer (11/25).

This is an attractive example, with rich orange-gold toning and deep olive highlights. Lightly abraded with scattered small circulation marks, none of them being distracting. Luster is observed in sheltered areas, including the lettering, stars and date, along with luster within the hair curls and eagle feathers. Fully struck with excellent definition of design elements. An exceptional Bass provenance, combined with an attractive appearance, makes this coin a highly desirable specimen.(Registry values: N4719)
