Description

1864-S Ten Dollar Liberty, XF Details
The Second-Rarest Date in the Series
Few Known in Any Grade

1864-S $10 -- Altered Surfaces -- PCGS Genuine. XF Details. The 1864-S is a great rarity in the Liberty ten dollar gold series regardless of condition. Only the ultra-rare 1875 is scarcer. A mere 2,500 pieces were struck, from which 18 to 25 pieces survive plus a small number of impaired examples such as this coin. The 1864-S eagle seldom exceeds the VF grade level, making this XF Details example far sharper than the average survivor. The khaki-gold surfaces are slightly granular and subdued from mechanical smoothing but not all visual appeal is lost. A few shallow rim disturbances are of minor distraction. Despite the repair work, this coin displays sharpness that surpasses many other examples. There will be no shortage of bidders when this XF Details 1864-S is called.
