Exceedingly Rare 1864-S Ten-Dollar, AU 50 PCGS
1864-S AU 50 PCGS. An extremely rare Coronet ten that is even rarer than its mintage of 2,500 pieces would suggest. Breen estimates that only 10-12 coins are known, and using current population data (4/97) as a guide, this piece is the finest known to either service. In Akers' survey done some years ago, the 1864-S was tied for first place in the entire series in rarity according to average grade and was second in rarity according to frequency of appearance. Like an XF 40 that we offered almost four years ago, the surfaces of this piece are rather heavily abraded and show deep reddish patina around the margins. The most obvious mark on the obverse is a long scratch along the baseline of the truncation of the bust. On the reverse there are a series of angling marks below S(TATES). Softly struck in most areas but most pronounced on the neck of the eagle. An important coin for the advanced gold specialist.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 264E, PCGS# 8640, GSID# 9463)
