Elusive 1864-S XF 45 Liberty Ten Dollar

1864-S XF 45 PCGS. An extremely scarce Coronet ten that is even more elusive than its mintage of 2,500 pieces would suggest. Breen estimated that only 10-12 pieces survive, while in Akers' survey done some years ago, the 1864-S was tied for first place in the entire series in rarity according to average grade and was second in rarity according to frequency of appearance. This piece shows even wear on the obverse, with better detail than is usually seen on the typically-weak neck feathers of the eagle. The coin has excellent light orange-gold color and has remarkably clean surfaces for the grade. Original mint frost and luster are still visible across the surfaces. Population: 5 in 45, 3 finer (6/00). (NGC ID# 264E, PCGS# 8640)
