Description
1865 Ten Dollar, Richly Patinated AU50
Rare in All Grades
1865 $10 AU50 NGC. Ex: Bently Collection. As gold coins
generally did not circulate during the Civil War period, except in
the Western regions, the Philadelphia Mint produced only limited
quantities of ten dollar gold pieces each year. The production
total in 1865, therefore, was a typical mintage figure for the
period, even if only 3,980 pieces were struck. A couple Mint State
survivors have been certified by the leading services, though this
issue is nonetheless rare in all grades, especially above the XF
grade level. This example is undeniably original, exhibiting rich
orange-gold patina over each side that deepens to bold
reddish-orange around the margins. Light, even wear is noted over
the high points, and the abrasions present are small and in concert
with the grade. Census: 7 in 50, 17 finer (9/14).(Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 264F, PCGS# 8641, Greysheet# 9386)
