Description

1865 Ten Dollar, AU50
Final P-Mint No Motto Issue

1865 $10 AU50 NGC. Probably 75 or so examples of the 1865 eagle survive. Only 3,980 ten dollar gold coins were struck during the final year of the Civil War, which was still exerting tremendous influence on the hoarding and export of gold and silver coinage. This semikey Philadelphia issue is typically encountered in VF to XF condition. Possibly 15 to 20 pieces are known across all About Uncirculated grades, and only two coins exist in Mint State: An MS60 NGC coin from the S.S. Republic and an MS63 example graded by PCGS.

This piece has the prooflike surfaces sometimes found on coins from this issue. The central motifs are moderately frosted, standing out against partly reflective fields. Light merging is seen over well-struck devices. There are abundant marks on each side, with one on Liberty's neck more prominent than the rest. Census: 5 in 50, 20 finer (1/18).
