Description

1865 Liberty Eagle, AU55
Important Condition Rarity

1865 $10 AU55 NGC. In the closing days of the Civil War, the Philadelphia Mint coined 3,980 eagles throughout the year. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth suggest that this issue has a "higher-than-normal survival rate" and is one of the least rare issues of the Civil War years. However, they were not talking about high grade pieces, and the combined NGC and PCGS population of 12 pieces in AU55 and seven finer tells a story of rarity. This Choice AU example retains considerable luster on its straw-gold surfaces with minimal marks on each side. An excellent example for the advanced specialist. Census: 6 in 55, 5 finer (11/17).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 264F, PCGS# 8641, Greysheet# 9386)
