Description

Rare Choice AU 1865 Ten Dollar

1865 $10 AU55 NGC. Since gold coins failed to circulate in 1865 except in the far West, ten dollar production was limited that year to 25 proofs and 3,980 business strikes. The latter were ignored by collectors of the day. NGC has certified just 28 pieces in all grades, with a solitary MS60 as the single finest. The present moderately abraded example displays substantial subtle luster. The obverse center shows some incompleteness of strike. From the historic year of 1865, when the Civil War ended and reconstruction began. Census: 4 in 55, 4 finer (8/07).(Registry values: N4719)
