Description

Elusive 1865 AU 53 Eagle

1865 AU 53 NGC. An impressively scarce Civil War issue of just 3,980 business strikes. Akers made the comment in his book on the ten-dollar series that he had never seen an 1865 above XF. A few high-grade pieces have surfaced since that time, including at least two mint state coins. The central devices of this example are a bit weakly struck with noticeably weak definition over Liberty's ear, as is normal. A number of minor field marks are noted and there are a couple of shallow abrasions on each side. Some original luster remains in the protected areas.
