1865-S Ten-Dollar, 865 Over Inverted 186
1865-S 865 Over Inverted 186 XF 40 ANACS. This particular die variety was created when a mint employee punched the first three digits of the date into the die upside down, (rotated 180 degrees from the normal position). He then discovered his mistake, and corrected it by repunching the numerals in their correct position. This specimen shows the die blunder quite well even though it is struck a bit softly in the centers. A hint of coppery color has formed over the years in the peripheral areas.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 264G, PCGS# 8643, GSID# 9465)
