Description

1865-S Eagle, VF30
Scarce in All Grades

1865-S $10 VF30 NGC. Two die pairs exist for this low-mintage, low-surviving San Francisco ten dollar gold. Both obverses show date anomalies. The so-called normal date features a narrowly repunched 5 in the date as seen on this example. The normal date variety is offered even less frequently than the blundered date variety (with the Inverted Date 865 over 186), though all 1865-S eagles should be considered elusive in any grade. This is an attractive midgrade survivor without the normally seen marks and abrasions so common to these coins. This coin's long tenure in West Coast commerce has long mitigated any heavy marks or abrasions. Only 35 to 50 normal date coins are thought to survive in all circulated grades combined. Census: 3 in 30, 24 finer (7/24).(Registry values: N2998)
