Description

Eye-Appealing Choice XF 1865-S Eagle

1865-S $10 XF45 PCGS. Inverted Date. A spectacular and popular error. Despite light buildup through the peripheral devices, including the date, the blundered date diagnostics are clear, especially the upper serif of the 1 inside of the lower loop of the 5. Light circulation wear is expected on this popular and scarce Civil War S-mint issue, but the considerable eye appeal is unexpected. Deep apricot-gold patina on both sides complements the tinges of gold seen through the date. Wear and a typical strike have conspired to efface some detail on the eagle's wingtips, neck feathers, and fletchings, but the contact marks are few. A single scrape on Liberty's neck requires mention. Population: 2 in 45, 1 finer (3/06).(Registry values: N4719)
