Description

Finest Certified 1865-S AU 58 Liberty Ten Dollar

1865-S AU 58 NGC. An unheralded rarity among ten dollar Liberty issues, both outright and conditionally, being nearly twice as scarce as the '65-S with inverted date and virtually on par with the low mintage 1864-S eagle. This is one of only a handful of Aus known to exist from both obverse dies, and is an attractive piece with a slight reddish tint and occasional softness on the obverse stars and eagle's neck feathers. Abrasions are generally nonobtrusive and limited to the exposed fields. As no Mint State survivors have been certified by either major service, this may well be the finest known 1865-S eagle. Population: 1 in 58, none finer (1/99).
