Important Borderline Unc. 1865-S Ten Dollar

1865-S AU 58 NGC. An unheralded rarity among No Motto eagles, both outright and conditionally, being nearly twice as scarce as the '65-S with inverted date and virtually on par with the 1864-S ten dollar, of which only 2,500 pieces were struck. This is one of only a handful of AUs known to exist from both obverse dies, and is an attractive piece with a slight reddish tint and occasional softness on the obverse stars and eagle's neck feathers. Abrasions are generally unobtrusive and limited to the exposed fields. As no Mint State survivors have been certified by either major service, this important 1865-S eagle ranks high on the list of Condition Census examples. Population: 2 in 58, none finer (9/99).
