1866 Motto Ten Dollar, AU53
Rich Original Patina
1866 $10 AU53 NGC. A paltry mintage of only 3,780 With Motto
gold eagles was accomplished in 1866, and these experienced a high
attrition rate; only 75 to 90 pieces are extant in all grades, per
the PCGS website estimate, and only five examples have been
certified as Mint State (all NGC coins). This AU representative has
deep apricot-gold color over fields that show substantial
semiprooflike mirroring. Grade-consistent abrasions and high-point
friction are present, but hardly impede the eye appeal. Census: 7
