Description

1866 Motto Eagle, AU55
Seldom Seen in Finer Grades

1866 $10 AU55 PCGS. All 1866 eagles struck were of the With Motto type with IN GOD WE TRUST added on a scroll on the reverse, but the production was a meager 3,750 pieces. Most of those circulated rather heavily, so that today the average certified survivor is only Choice XF or thereabouts. PCGS shows two examples or submissions in the AU55 grade of this piece and three in AU58, but none in Mint State; NGC shows two each in MS60 and MS61. This example boasts rich orange-red luster with scattered minor marks on each side that do little to negate the strong eye appeal. Auction offerings of finer-graded examples are infrequent; we count 11 in the past 15 years.
