Description

1866 With Motto Ten, MS61
Only Two Certified Finer

1866 $10 MS61 NGC. The date is sharply doubled as always for the circulation strike 1866 eagles (proofs have a normal date). Gold coin production came nearly to a halt at the Philadelphia Mint throughout the 1860s, during and after the Civil War, beginning in 1862. From that year through 1877, the average coinage of circulation-strike Liberty eagles was less than 6,400 coins per year. The first year of the With Motto reverse type had a below average mintage of only 3,750 coins. Nearly 40 years ago, David Akers wrote that he had only seen one Mint State example of this issue, although NGC reports seven such pieces today. PCGS has not certified any Mint State representatives. This impressive example has lovely orange-gold luster with minimal marks are reflective surfaces. The strike is good, and the eye appeal is excellent. Census: 3 in 61 (1 in 61+), 2 finer (1/18).
