Description
1866 Liberty Eagle, MS61
Condition Census Example
1866 $10 MS61 NGC. The design of the Liberty eagle was
modified to include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse in
1866 and a small production of 3,750 pieces was accomplished at the
Philadelphia Mint. PCGS CoinFacts estimates the surviving
population at 75-90 examples in all grades and most examples seen
are in the XF to lower AU grade range. The issue is decidedly rare
at the MS61 grade level, and finer coins are virtually
unobtainable. This impressive MS61 example fits comfortably in the Condition Census for the issue, as NGC has certified two coins in MS61 (one of those in 61+), with two finer, while PCGS has graded a single example in MS61 (10/21). The design elements are sharply detailed throughout. The yellow and greenish-gold surfaces show considerable chatter in the fields, but no large or distracting marks are evident. Traces of prooflike reflectivity show in sheltered areas around the devices. This coin will be a welcome addition to a fine collection or Registry Set.(Registry values: N7079)
